‘aqeeqah, should a poor pay when she or he has debt to pay?

Praise be to Allah
In the name of Allah the most gracious most merciful.Aqeeqa is an act shown by prophet (sal)
‘Aqeeqah is Sunnah mu’akkadah. For a boy two sheep which meet the conditions for sacrifice should be slaughtered, and for a girl one sheep. The sheep should be slaughtered on the seventh day, but if it is delayed it is permissible to slaughter them at any time, and there is no sin in delaying it, but it is better to do it as soon as possible.

It was narrated that Buraydah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: During the Jaahiliyyah, if a boy was born to one of us, we would slaughter a sheep and smear his head with its blood. When Allaah brought Islam, we would slaughter a sheep and shave (the child’s) head and smear it with saffron (Saffron is a type of perfume. )Narrated by Abu Dawood, 2843; classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani inSaheeh Abi Dawood.

It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded them (to slaughter) two sheep of similar type for a boy and one sheep for a girl.  Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1513, who said it is hasan saheeh; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

But there is no difference of opinion that it is not obligatory for one who is poor, let alone one who is in debt. Something that is more important than ‘aqeeqah – such as Hajj for example – does not take precedence over paying off debts.

“Allaah burdens not a person beyond his scope” [al-Baqarah 2:286]

“and [Allaah] has not laid upon you in religion any hardship” [al-Hajj 22:78]
