A forgotten Sunnah !
Today my article is going to be a about a Sunnah that is forgotten by most except some of us who are guided by Allah to follow many sunnahs. The forgotten Sunnah which I am writing today is about "As Suthra", Some of you might have heard this word "As Suthra" while others might have not even heard of it. Let us Study this sunnah using Ahadeeth!
What is "As Suthra" and what should i use as"As Suthra" ?
The sutrah is a confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah mu’akkadah). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When one of you prays, let him pray facing a sutrah, and let him draw close to it.” Narrated by Abu Dawood with a jayyid isnaad.
And in another situation he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Let one of you use a sutrah when praying, even if it is an arrow.” Narrated by Ahmad and by al Hakim
Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In this hadeeth it is recommended to have a sutrah in front of the one who is praying, and it explains that the minimum sutrah is the back of a saddle, which is the length of the forearm, or approximately two thirds of a cubit. This purpose may be served by anything that he sets up in front of him.
from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was asked about the sutrah for one who is praying and he said: “Like the back of a saddle.” Narrated by Muslim (771).
With regard to whether it should be thick or thin, there is no definition that we are aware of. It may be thin like an arrow or a spear, or it may be thick like a wall. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to use a short spear as a sutrah.
It is Sunnah for the worshipper, if he is praying alone or as an imam, to have a sutrah in front of him that will prevent people from walking in front of him, and to enable him to focus properly on the actions of the prayer.
What is "As Suthra" and what should i use as"As Suthra" ?
The suthra is mustahabb according to the majority of fuqaha’, The sutrah is a sort of partition in front of him to prevent people from walking in front of him and to enable him to focus properly on the actions of the prayer.

Why is "As Suthra" So important?
It was narrated that Sahl ibn Sa’d said: Between the place where the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prayed and the wall was a space that would allow a sheep to pass. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 474; Muslim, 508).
Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) who said: “When one of you prays facing a sutrah, let him draw close to it so that the Shaytaan will not interrupt his prayer.” Classed as hasan by Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr in al-Tamheed (4/195); classed as saheeh by al-Nawawi in al-Majmoo ‘ (4/195) and by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.
It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed ‘Eid at the prayer place, using a small spear as a Sutrah.(ibn Majah)
It was narrated in al-Saheeh that Abu Juhaym said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If a person who passes in front of someone who is praying knew (the burden of sin) that he bears, he would rather stand for forty than pass in front of him.” Abu al-Nadr said, “I do not know whether he said forty days or months or years.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Salaah, 480; Muslim, al-Salaah, 507).
