Friendship is more than spending time together, sharing laughter, or exchanging messages. The people we choose to keep close can influence our thinking, behaviour, decisions, and even our relationship with Allah.
A good friend can encourage us to pray, remind us of our responsibilities, support us during hardship, and inspire us to do good. A harmful friendship, however, can gradually make disobedience seem normal and lead us towards choices we may eventually regret.
Just as the food we eat affects our physical health, the company we keep affects our hearts, minds, and character. This is why Islam teaches us not only to value friendship but also to be careful about whom we allow to influence our lives.
The important question is not simply, “Who are my friends?” but “What kind of person am I becoming because of my friendships?”
1. Your Closest Friends Can Influence Your Faith
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us a clear warning about choosing companions.
He ﷺ said:
“A person is upon the religion of his close friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.”
— Sunan Abi Dawud, 4833; Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, 2378.
This Hadith reminds us that companionship has a powerful influence on our lives. When we spend time with people who value honesty, modesty, kindness, and obedience to Allah, we are more likely to be encouraged towards those qualities. When our companions repeatedly encourage lying, gossip, injustice, or sinful behaviour, we may gradually become accustomed to things we once recognised as wrong.
Influence does not always happen suddenly. Sometimes it begins with a small compromise, an inappropriate joke, a neglected responsibility, or a habit we adopt simply because everyone around us is doing it.Over time, these small changes can shape our character.
Therefore, choosing friends requires wisdom. We should look beyond popularity, wealth, appearance, or entertainment and consider the values a person brings into our lives.
Imagine reaching the Day of Judgment and wishing that you had never followed the advice of a particular friend.
The Qur'an describes the regret of a person who chose a companion who led him away from guidance.
Allah says:
“Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend., “He led me away from the Reminder after it had come to me.” Qur'an, Surah Al-Furqan (25:28& 29)
These verses reveal the seriousness of choosing companions who turn us away from the truth.
A person may neglect prayer because friends make fun of religious commitment. Another may become involved in harmful behaviour because they fear losing their social circle. Someone else may abandon beneficial habits simply to gain acceptance.
At the time, these decisions might appear insignificant. But on the Day of Judgment, when the consequences of our choices become clear, regret will not undo what has been done.
This is why we must evaluate our relationships while we still have the opportunity to change direction.A true friend will not deliberately encourage you to destroy your faith, damage your character, or neglect your responsibilities.
Never sacrifice your relationship with Allah just to preserve your place in someone's friendship circle.
3. The Qualities of a Friend Worth Keeping
A righteous friend does not need to be perfect. Every human being makes mistakes, and all of us need reminders and encouragement. What matters is whether a friend sincerely tries to do what is right and is willing to accept guidance.
Look for a friend who:
- Reminds you of Allah and encourages you to remember the Hereafter.
- Encourages you to perform good deeds and fulfil your responsibilities.
- Corrects you with kindness rather than humiliating you.
- Protects your dignity and does not expose your private matters.
- Celebrates your success without jealousy.
- Supports you during difficult times and encourages you to remain patient.
- Helps you grow in knowledge, character, and good manners.
- Encourages you to correct your mistakes rather than justify them.
