Disciplining the Soul Based on 'Tibb al-Ruhani' by Ibn al-Jawzi (rahimahullah)

Disciplining the Soul - Ibn al-Jawzi

Disciplining the Soul

Based on 'Tibb al-Ruhani' by Ibn al-Jawzi (rahimahullah)

"Every breath we take is taking us closer to death. The time we spend in this world is short, the time we are held in our graves is long, and the punishment for following our lowly desires is calamitous."

📖 Deep Analysis

1. The Struggle Between Reason and Desire

Within every human, there is a constant battle between Reason (Aql) and Desire (Hawa). Reason is the guide that foresees consequences and looks to the future. Desire is a blind ruler that seeks only immediate gratification. Success depends on granting Reason the authority to govern the soul.

2. Identifying Spiritual Ailments

Just as we seek a physician when the body falls ill, we must apply spiritual remedies when the soul is afflicted by diseases such as envy, arrogance, and anger. This is known as "Tibb al-Ruhani" or Spiritual Medicine.

3. Steps to Discipline the Soul

  • Muhasabah (Self-Reflection): Questioning oneself at the end of each day about one's mistakes and righteous deeds.
  • Mujahadah (Struggle): Actively fighting against the soul when it leans toward sinful desires.
  • Sabr (Patience): Enduring the difficulty of refraining from sin and remaining steadfast in worship.

Restraining Excessive Speech

The heart becomes hardened by speech that holds no benefit. Always consider the goodness of your words before speaking.

Guarding the Gaze

Looking at forbidden things diminishes the purity of the soul. Protecting your eyes is the key to keeping your mind clear and focused.
